My name is Steve, I am 53 years old, married and I have two girls, ages 18 and 21.  Eleven years ago, I was doing clerical work for a small company, working the typical forty plus hours a week, with an hour  commute.  I got two weeks off a year, but I couldn’t afford a nice vacation for my family.   After being there for 5 years and doing a good job, I was laid off, because the bosses business slowed up.  While I was looking for another job, a friend of mine told me to look into selling Merchant Accounts to businesses.  I had never heard of it.  He said he knew someone that was doing it and they were rich!  He also said that it didn’t take a lot of money to do it and it paid RESIDUAL INCOME!  Those were the key words for me.  I wanted to do something that would earn me money, even when I wasn’t working.  I was tired of working long hours and living paycheck to paycheck, trading my hours for some dollars, that wouldn’t buy everything my family and I wanted.  I was tired of not being in control of my life and having a boss over me. 

Up to that point in my life, I had never sold a thing and I will admit to you, that even to this day, I am not a great sales person.  You don’t have to be a great sales person and you can still do extremely well.    

Let me explain what a Merchant Account is all about; every business, like a restaurant, clothing store, car repair shop, internet business, has a merchant account so their customers can pay with Visa/MC, AmEx and Discover cards.  So you are selling the business something that they need.  In fact, if a business wants to accept credit cards, they have to have a Merchant Account.   When a customer buys something from a business with a credit card, that sale has to be processed and that is what a Merchant Account does.   That’s what I sell, I sell Merchant Accounts.  A Merchant Account is what does the credit card processing for a business.  All it involves for me is filling out a 3-page application and obtaining a few documents from the business owner, it’s not hard at all.   

 Visa/MC gives us their costs, plus we have to pay the Network that we use, to run the credit card transactions.  I price the businesses credit card processing fees above these costs and I get 35% of that profit.  The great thing about what I do; is once I setup a Merchant Account, I rarely have to do anything for that merchant and I get paid my 35% profit, month after month after month.  I have some merchants that I have been paid on for over 10 years.  I can take a vacation and I am still making money.  Every time any of my merchants is paid with a Visa or a Mastercard, by one of their customers, I am making money.  On some of my merchants I only make a few dollars a month and on some merchants, I make over a $1,000 a month!  It all depends on how you price the merchant and how much Visa/MC volume the merchant does each month.   

I also make money for application fees, equipment sales and leasing, AmEx and Discover setup fees.

 I work out of my home, I have a computer with internet access (DSL), a fax/copy machine, a business phone with an answering machine, a cell phone and that is really all you need!

 After eleven years in this business, I can honestly say that I still love it.  How many people can say that after eleven years?  It is interesting work; you meet all sorts of people, you see all types of businesses and you make great money!

 I sign up merchants that are near me and I sign up merchants that are across the country.  A lot of my merchants I have never even met, I do it all over the phone and by fax.

 You might be wondering if you can make any money in this business, because you didn’t get started 11 years ago like me.  The answer is yes, you can make money!  There is so much business out there!  Every month there are approximately 100,000 new businesses that startup and they all need a Merchant Account.  Every time a business is sold, the new owner needs a new Merchant Account.  Existing merchants may not be happy with their present credit card processor and want to change.  People are using credit cards more than ever before.  This business is even recession proof; when there’s a recession; people use their credit cards more, not less.  You don’t need to sign up a ton of merchants to make good money.  In the last 4 years I have signed up about 300 merchants, that I am receiving monthly residuals on and I am making a mid 6-figure income (that’s over $50,000 a month)!
